“I started SD Sails in 1992 at the tender age of 20, in an old barn near Gatwick Airport. Having been a sailor all my life, I had worked for another sailmaker since leaving school, whilst also pursuing a career as a professional windsurfer in the hay-day of the sport.
Having racked up National, European and World titles racing windsurfers, I made the decision to set up my own sail loft making and repairing windsurfing sails after the loft I was working at moved all their production to China.
The business soon grew to encompass dinghy and yacht sails as well as all the associated canvas work, leading to extra employees and larger premises. By the end of the 90’s, shade sails were occupying more and more of the production queue, and by the end of the following decade, they had pretty much taken over the business.
That progressive move in to a commercial market place has allowed us to invest heavily in the right tools for the job, which combined with experienced and skillful staff, has now taken our services world wide”.
